DREAM 1 happens this weekend

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

The last PRIDE FC event happened less than a year ago and already there in a brand new Japanese promotion that is poised to take its place.  I’m talking about DREAM.  DREAM is being put together by the owners of K-1 (Fighting and Entertainment Group) in collaboration with ex-PRIDE executives.

Saturday marks the very first DREAM event.  It will be the first round of a lightweight grand prix tournament.   According to MMA Weekly rankings, the #2, #3, #4, #5, and #10 lightweights in the world are going to be participating.  The only way I could be more excited is if this event wasn’t in Japan so I could watch the damn thing.  As far as I’m concerned whoever ends up taking this grand prix title has to be considered the best lightweight fighter in the world.

DREAM 1 also marks the return of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic to Japan after his disasterous tour in the UFC.  He is scheduled to face some fat Japanese  pancrase regular  named Tatsuya Mizuno.  I think this could be Cro Cop’s return to form.  It is easy to forget that it was less than two years ago that Cro Cop won the PRIDE open weight grand prix.

Look for my DREAM 1 picks to be posted sometime tomorrow!
