Fedor Emelianenko vs Brock Lesnar – An Interesting Futures Proposition
Tuesday, July 28th, 2009BetUs.com and Bodog currently have futures bets available for a possible Lesnar vs. Emelianenko superfight. BetUs lists Fedor at -220 and Lesnar at +175. Bodog lists Fedor at -225 and Lesnar at +185. So for the most part they are in agreement. I have to say I actually like these lines. I think too much more for Fedor would be giving him too much respect, and giving Lesnar a more favorable line wouldn’t be giving Fedor enough respect. If I had to place a bet on these lines right now I’d have to take Fedor. At -220 Fedor would need a 69% chance of winning. I would give him those odds right now. Lesnar has yet to completely prove himself. Sure, he dismantled Mir, but Mir gave him a lot of bulletin board material to get worked up about. The Last Emperor would never do that. On top of that I didn’t find Lesnar’s win over Couture to be overly impressive.
Although I say that I approve of this line, I wouldn’t be surprised if it moved drastically as the fight becomes closer to a reality.
Fun Fact: If you type The Last Emperor into Google Image Search you won’t find a picture of Fedor until the 7th page.
Do I really need a reason to post this?
Brock Lesnar: Heel or Asshole?
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008Here’s an interesting question: Is Brock Lesnar playing the WWF style heel role, or is he as big of a prick as he lets on? For those who don’t know professional wrestling insider vernacular (shame on you!) a heel is professional wrestler who acts like a villain to incite the crowd. So is this what Lesnar is doing? Is he putting on a show to make the crowd hate him knowing it will sell more PPVs and therefore raise his worth in the eyes of the UFC? Or is he really just that hateable?
I think he has to be putting on an act and intentionally playing the heel role. Even if he isn’t, at worst he is allowing himself to do things he wants to do naturally, but could easily stop if he thought they would have negative consequences on his future in the world of MMA. I don’t blame him for his actions. Fighting is a business, and if acting like a dick makes you more money it’s your right. But his choice to play the heel role when he could let his talent and massive size be his selling points seems a little misguided to me. A mediocre fighter (*cough* Phil Baroni *cough*) can keep themselves on TV by perfecting a heel act, but talented fighters have no need for a such character building exercises.
But what do I know? Maybe he really is just a dick.
Heath Herring UFC 87 Betting Line Update
Wednesday, August 6th, 2008Bodoglife.com now lists Heath Herring at +190 for his match against Brock Lesnar. I said +210 was too good to be true…
I’m working on a UFC 87 preview that I should have up on this site by Thursday at the latest. But until then, here is a video of Heath Herring discussing how he thinks the Lesnar fight will go:
UFC 87 Heath Herring vs. Brock Lesnar Early Thoughts
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008Right now Heath Herring is +210 at Bodoglife.com compared to Brock Lesnar’s -270. I think the odds for Herring are too good.
I’ve always thought that Herring is a top ten fighter, and I still do. MMA Weekly has Aleksander Emelianenko as their #10 heavyweight, and Sherdog.com has Ben Rothwell as their #10. Herring wouldn’t be a favorite over either of those fighters? Really?
I like Herring’s chances in this fight. Although he is mostly known as a striker, Herring has won a number of fights in the past by submission. I think his extra submission skills could give him what he needs to beat a fighter like Lesnar. I’ll take +210 in a heartbeat.
